■ A Philosophical Deficit in Life Science: ㅡHow We Cultivate Disaster To institutionally support the production of safe food, the South Korean government, since 1995, has not only adhered to the international Codex Alimentarius standards but also established its own public entity, the 'HACCP Standards Institute.' This body created a framework for risk assessment at every stage, from the rearing of livestock to the moment it reaches our tables, ensuring that only food which passes these stringent criteria can be served.
Despite these measures, South Korea has been plagued by recurring outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (AI) since its first appearance in 2003. In response, the government has focused its considerable efforts primarily on preventing the spread of the disease. However, this approach overlooks a more fundamental truth. Nature, in ways that often transcend human understanding, manages our planet through a creative, evolutionary, and cyclical system.
Microorganisms, for instance, perform the vital work of catabolism, decomposing plants and animals that have died or been culled, thereby cleansing and purifying the environment. This intricate web of life is built on a system of checks and balances within a symbiotic framework, sustaining a stable and harmonious environment. The principle we must not ignore here is the universal necessity of adequate space. Whether for an animal, a plant, or a microbe, a certain amount of space is essential for its existence and healthy activity.
This concept holds true across all scales. At the atomic level, the space between a nucleus and its orbiting electrons is vast, approximately ten thousand times the size of the nucleus itself. At the macro level, a similar principle of proportional space governs the relationship between the Sun and Earth, or the Earth and its Moon. Today, experts increasingly warn that the spread of AI in the southern regions of our country is not only causing devastating economic losses for livestock farmers but also risks escalating into a Class 1 zoonotic disease, posing a direct threat to human life. For animals, adequate room to move and clean air to breathe are not luxuries but biological imperatives. The intense overcrowding on factory farms generates a toxic cocktail of harmful gases—methane, arsenic, and ammonia—which inevitably leads to respiratory diseases and severely compromises their physiological well-being. In this context, initiatives like 'Freedom Food'—a standard that originated in the United Kingdom and is now gaining international recognition—are elevating consumer consciousness.
'Freedom Food' is a certification from the UK's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) that guarantees the welfare of farm animals. It assures consumers that the product comes from an environment where the animals' fundamental rights have been honored: the right to adequate space, fresh air, and clean, balanced nutrition. It is my earnest hope that South Korea will swiftly embrace and implement this philosophy of animal welfare on its farms.
By doing so, we can restore the integrity of nature's cyclical system, revitalize the evolutionary food chain, and once again feel the profound "vibrancy of life" that arises from a healthy, thriving ecosystem.
