Anyone who genuinely believes Elon Musk is sending human beings—or anything remotely substantial—interstellar within our lifetime is fucked in the head and does not understand physics.
Interstellar travel is not merely “Mars, but farther away”. The nearest star system is more than four light-years away. Even at ten per cent of light speed, which is vastly beyond anything Musk has demonstrated, the journey would take more than forty years before accounting for acceleration, deceleration, course correction, system failures or survival.
Then there is the matter of particles. At relativistic sub-light speeds, ordinary hydrogen atoms are no longer harmless gas. From the spacecraft’s frame, they arrive as high-energy ionising radiation. They penetrate materials, damage electronics, break chemical bonds, degrade shielding and irradiate anything alive inside.
Dust is worse. A microscopic grain striking a spacecraft at ten per cent of light speed does not make a small dent. It releases its kinetic energy almost instantaneously, producing intense heat, plasma, shock waves, fragmentation and secondary radiation. A one-microgram particle at 0.1c carries roughly 450 kilojoules of kinetic energy—comparable to about a tenth of a kilogram of TNT—concentrated onto a microscopic impact point.
Increase the speed and the problem becomes nonlinear because relativistic kinetic energy rises rapidly. Shielding must become thicker, which increases mass.
More mass requires more propulsion energy. More propulsion energy requires more fuel or a vastly larger external power system. Then the craft still has to slow down at the destination rather than simply blasting through the system at a significant fraction of light speed.
This is not a software problem, a branding problem or a question of “moving fast and breaking things”. At interstellar velocities, the things being broken are the spacecraft, its electronics and the people inside it.
Musk has built rockets. He has not repealed relativity, solved relativistic dust shielding, created a practical interstellar propulsion system, or produced an energy budget remotely capable of supporting one. Believing that publicity, capital and animated renderings somehow overcome those constraints is not technological optimism. It is scientific illiteracy with a fan club.
