Asked by a partial father to join him on a trip to the open road As the wheels and the road meet Like a fresh love picked from a tree The pattern of the road bumps grew louder Sitting in a small car driving unending miles Numerous abstractions made comfort in my mind Looking out the window, staring at white crystals in the sky Only thought that turned the light bulb on was home Feeling relief from school, a broken place The most important thought that fell out of my mind Leaving a note to mother I didn’t think nothing of it Like a life of split decision, careless seconds As the sky reveals night So did mother's growing fear of her youngest child Feelings of scarce thoughts Making a long ride back home Feeding the gas meter and the tire with air we breathe, Seventy- five cents of free air At the doorstep, behind it, was a panic dread Mother, waiting on calls to relieve her of her pain Stepping through the door A hand beat me to the gold knob A soft torn choke voice, that said my name A phone in hand, a picture of me in the other Five hours, five hours of tears, five hours that change A calm heart, to a fast worried one As I looked at sad eyes My tears began to rush down For not telling her That dreadful moment I will never forget That night, looking at a worried face
